William S. Fairbanks

William S. Fairbanks, 93, of Sumner, died Friday, October 17, 2014, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

There will be no services or visitation. Burial will be held at a later date. The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

William Steward Fairbanks, son of Steward and Kathryn (Strike) Fairbanks, was born May 1, 1921, at Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1949 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Natoma Bay. On June 16, 1943, he was united in marriage with Marjorie J. Diekmann at the First Lutheran Church in Waterloo. William was employed for many years by Westinghouse in the Pittsburgh area and later was employed by McCullough in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He retired from McCullough in 1982, and the couple stayed in Arizona for a brief time. For the past seventeen years, they have lived in Sumner.

In addition to his wife Marjorie of Sumner, Bill is survived by a nephew, John Diekmann of Tryon, North Carolina; a great-niece, Lucy (Lee) Panich of Santa Rosa, California; and great-great niece and nephew Tessa and Oliver Panich; and numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Eleanor; an infant brother, Roger; and many cousins and friends.

We were so sorry to hear of Bills passing. I told Mom yesterday she talked of many memories of the four of you. I know Dennis and I always enjoyed visiting you and your dog. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
